Airbnb may be all the rage, but not everyone wants to stay in someone else's home. Traditional hotels still have a lot to offer in terms of locations, amenities, services and luxury. Stays in great hotels typically comes at a premium price, but there are a number of ways to reduce the costs.

If you fancy something more luxurious than an Airbnb, then try our tips to find cheaper hotel room deals.

Book early

Often booking early can help you secure a cheaper stay. Accorhotels, for example, offer a 30% discount for booking 30 or more days in advance of a stay. Accorhotels include ibis, Mercure, Novotel, Sofitel and Pullman hotel brands.

Wherever you want to stay, it may be worth asking if there are discounts for advance booking.

Book late

It's risky, but if you can afford to wait until the last minute there are a number of ways to save on hotel rooms.

Find late cancellation deals on sites like Roomer and Cancelon, or find other last minute hotel deals with Priceline's Express Deals or the Hotel Tonight app.

If you're waiting until the last minute - don't put all your eggs in one basket. Keep an eye on Airbnb or a number of hotel booking sites to ensure you don't run out of options at the last minute.

Secret hotel deals

Many of the best hotels are reluctant to publicly advertise discount deals, concerned that this could harm their luxury brands. This is why secret hotel deals exist.

Lastminute.com has a 'Top Secret Hotel' system, while LateRooms.com offers a similar service which you can find if you include 'secret hotel' in your search terms.

Secret hotel deals are some of the best out there but you typically don't find out where you are staying until the night before. If you can bear a bit of uncertainty then secret hotel deals could be a great option.

Go direct

If you have a particular hotel in mind, it may be worth contacting them directly to ask for discounts or deals, especially if you are looking for a longer or out-of-season stay.

Kayak allows you to set-up price alerts for specific hotels. This way you can be notified by email when the price of staying in a particular hotel drops to within your budget.

Often new hotels are interested in offering discounted stays while they get filled up. You could keep an eye on the Hotel News Resource for new hotel openings.

Be a reviewer

You don't have to set up a travel blog to make money writing travel reviews. Yonderbound allows you to create accommodation reviews just like TripAdvisor, but when users book a hotel after reading your review you earn a commission on the sale.

Other ways to find deals

There are many other ways to reduce the cost of staying in a hotel. You can look for hotel deals on sites like Groupon or LivingSocial.

You may find that any existing air miles or credit card points can be spent on accommodation.

You can use cashback sites like Quidco or TopCashback. These sites offer you cash rewards when you book through their website, and they work with many different companies. Cashback can take a few weeks to reach you but it's still a great way to reduce the cost of hotel deals.

Shop around using comparison websites like GoCompare, Travel Supermarket and Love Holidays who help you compare millions of hotel room deals from hundreds of different booking websites.
